The Bible is filled with references to Jerusalem, both in the Old and New Testaments. It talks about Jerusalem as both a literal place and as a symbol of what will come when God makes all things right and we live in the New Jerusalem.
Reading through this list of Bible verses about Jerusalem made me realize how truly important this city is to God and his people. I’m especially intrigued by the symbolism. Why did God choose this city to be his special city?

One thing I find interesting is that Jerusalem seems to represent both history and hope. So many pivotal events in Scripture happened there, yet the Bible also points beyond the earthly city to the New Jerusalem, where God will dwell with His people and make all things new.
That makes me wonder if God chose Jerusalem not only because of its historical importance, but also because it serves as a reminder that His story is ultimately about restoring His relationship with humanity. The earthly city points to a greater reality yet to come.
I also love how the Bible begins in a garden and ends with a city where God is present with His people. There is something beautiful about that progression.

Yes! I love the garden and city aspects too. I know they are literal, but they are also so symbolically/metaphorically rich.
