Day after day in and on the news, it is nothing but depresing news story after depressing news story. I remember when journalism had integrity, and restrained itself. Then, you did not assicioate a news station much with any particular political party or agenda. Now it seems that there are few if any that do not colour their product with propoganda. Web news and radio news are worse. So here are a few questions.
1- What are good alternative news sources that give fair coverage to all sides of any given story?
2- How does one know when they need a break from the news?
3- Can the mainstream media be redeemed or is it a lost cause?
im 37 and remember believing it had integrity and no particular party. i dont know how old you are, but i wonder from where im at, if i just didnt recognize the biases. because until 2020 nonsense, i didnt have a clue. by 2008 i felt they are all just bogus. then after 2020 i realized they are usually divided between “right” and “left.” STILL all bogus to me, but i began to see it way more squarely than id been able to before.
no idea, seriously.
when i get tired of watching the trainwreck.
cannot be redeemed; its all in the hands of billionaire liars. if they ever lose that power, those stations simply wont exist. just giving opinions here.
good question. ill keep that in mind in future reading of it.
Sort of. Jesus tells us that we should be aware of current events.
”Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.” Luke 21:10-11
However.
“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Ephesians 5:15-17
You also have to remember, garbage in, garbage out. If what you are seeing is not lifting you or others, it may be time to take a break and read the Bible. In the end, God is in charge of it all.
Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.
Psalm 1:1-3
I’m old enough to see that the news has changed. It used to be telling you what’s happened. Now it’s more telling you what happened and what you are to think about what happened. I would prefer just knowing the facts and making up my own mind about it, but that’s not the way it is.
There are a couple of Christian sites I visit that will give me the news, but from a Christian perspective. Often it’s news that fits in with Bible prophecy and how we should be mindful and be watching. It’s not all the news and sometimes its news from some place that main news sites don’t mention. If I go looking for it though I will find it.
With the regular news or mainstream news, I often just read the headline. There’s nothing I can do about it anyways. This works for me. I feel that I’m informed on what I need to know without becoming wrapped up in it.
I have found it helpful to be as open as one can to consider variances in news sources. I used to watch like Fox and MSNBC for contrast. But MSNBC just because propaganda. And Fox tends to be middle of the road careful at times. I do my best to get news from several different view points to challenge my own biases. So I am aware of. Some i am not. This is actually a super hot exciting time to do that sort of thing. Because regardless what our views are…things are shifting like crazy. Fireworks over the top. Pretty cool time to be alive. Blessings.
I do the same exact thing. I read/watch news from lots of different sources. Also, I don’t think of news outlets like NBC, CNN, or Fox as news. I remind myself that it’s 50% fact and 50% commentary. It’s hard to find a source that’s 100% fact without any commentary/bias. That’s why it’s necessary to watch/listen to all “sides.”

The “news media” outlets all have one important thing in common – they are businesses. As such, their primary goal is to make money, and not to dispense truth or facts. The facts they do dispense are carefully curated to positively enhance their bottom line, period. Regardless of how unbiased they claim to be, they all cater to their base, and they all answer to their sponsors. I am constantly amazed at how some person can develop a very strong opinion on some event or personality when the entirety of their information comes from sources that are designed to skew the facts to pay the bills. These strong opinions, based on incomplete and heavily biased information, can even grown into violence and criminal activity. This makes no sense to me.
We have no means to ensure any news outlet reports accurate and complete facts. We can only turn them off, and refuse to listen to them. A person who does not listen to any “news” or “social media” is more accurately informed than one who does. (IMHO)
Did there not used to be a law that stipulated “news” agencies had to report all sides to any given story it covered? Seems to me that that used to be a thing. Not saying it was perfect, if it did exist, but it beats the unfilterd mess we have today.
And no, we can’t ensure that a “news” outlet reports accurate and complete facts, but we do have a way to process and sort news from a multitude of sources, getting a summary of all sides presented back to us… Alas, not everyone is on board with AI.
But that would beg one to ask, “How do we know the AI is not biased?” One can’t win for trying. Hence my saying with double meaning… No news is good news.
No, there is no LAW, as I remember, due to the fact a law would be in conflict with the first amendment to the constitution. But, before the internet, when access to the news was limited, the FCC did enforce a policy they called “The Fairness Doctrine”. Under the Fairness Doctrine, licensed broadcasters were required to “provide adequate opportunities” for contrary perspectives, particularly in news and public affairs programming. However, it didn’t mandate any expectation of “fair and balanced” reporting. It has always been controversial, it never really accomplished its goals, and it was nearly impossible to monitor. It was repealed almost 50 years ago.
The human proclivity to “lie for personal benefit” was as alive and active back then as it is today, and there is where the problem resides. Our remedy lies not in regulation or legislation, but in personally testifying to The Truth. Every time a born-again person of The Truth lies for personal benefit, even a little-bit, the enemy puts points up on the board (so-to-speak). We too often assist the enemy of truth for a supposed insignificant gain. If we want to stem misinformation and combat misrepresentation we need to start cleaning-up our own house first. (IMHO)
My brother told me a bill was passed. that the news can lie now. Look at YouTube. We can’t know what to believe. It’s all like the tabloids back in the day. What if the tabloids were the truth. and the news nothing but lies
@Hungry
Your brother is right. The bill was proposed by James Madison in 1789 and it was called “The Bill of Rights”. That bill contained language that said:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
That bill gave the press the right to lie without fear of incrimination.
That right to lie imposed on every American the responsibility to not listen to lies.
Welcome to America.
So check this out. you can not eat from both tables. the table of god wich is truth. And the doctrine of demons wich is lies. If you really start to examine this scripture in the bible. Are we not eating truth and lies. My answer was it’s all his table.
I believe the news is quite accurate, especially those with video footage showing multiple angles. I watch local news and national news all the time.
I am leery about propaganda news though… back in the day, we called it yellow journalism. Because it was so full of waste, maybe. (it was the color of the paper. They faked stories to get America into a war back in the day.)
It’s really obvious, though, who is sharing the facts and who is spinning tales. Only the truly lost in the mind and heart pursue the truth from liars and can’t accept the facts when the facts are so obvious and staring them right in the face.
