From coffee mugs to social media captions, Bible verses get quoted everywhere—but are they always quoted correctly? #MisusedVerses#ContextMatters#ScriptureAndCulture#christianforums#crosswalkforums#forums#crosswalk#faithcommunity#faithforums
It’s become almost a modern tradition: a verse lifted out of its chapter, stripped of its context, and plastered onto a bumper sticker, Instagram post, or motivational speech. But not every beloved verse means what people think it does.
Take “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Is that about sports wins and personal goals—or something deeper? Or “Judge not, lest ye be judged.” Is that a call for grace—or an excuse to avoid accountability?
Some verses are twisted into promises they never made. Others are used as weapons in arguments. And some get so overused that their real meaning gets lost altogether.
So here’s the question: Which verse do you think is most misunderstood—and why?
Is there a passage you’ve seen taken out of context again and again?
A verse that once confused you… until you read what came before or after it?
How do we guard against using Scripture for our agendas instead of God’s?
“When we misuse a verse, we risk misrepresenting the very heart of God behind it.”
Not sure about the most but, “Time heals all wounds” is a play on Psalm 147:3 (NIV) “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds”
This saying is commonly thought to be in the bible; the verse is referring to God - not time.
‘Where two or three are gathered, there I am in the midst of them’
Matthew 18 verse
Many use this to say two or three Christians gather anywhere for any purpose, and Jesus is there ‘in the midst ‘
This completely misses the context of resolving sin issues with a church member.
Context:
Matthew 18:15-17 KJB - Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.
16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.
This is what the two or three is about.. church discipline.
