What should we do about Christianity Today's hatchet job on Elisabeth Elliot?

Does a magazine that willingly slanders a hero of the faith deserve our patronage? Can they be persuaded to get back on track? Or should we shake the dust from our feet, and write off this publication as irredeemable?

I haven’t read the piece so I can’t say how fair it is, but Elisabeth Elliot’s writing got me through some lonely stretches, so I get why this stings. Whatever happens with the magazine, I’d rather answer it the way Paul says in Ephesians 4:15, “speaking the truth in love.” Hard to do when it feels personal, but I think it keeps the conversation honest.

I will have to read it. I was unaware of it until you brought it up. It’s often helpful to remember that even the most revered figures in scripture were flawed humans who needed grace. From Noah struggling with drunkenness to Moses making serious errors, God has consistently used imperfect people to accomplish great things. Perhaps we could approach this situation with the same grace and understanding, focusing on truth and love.

Be blessed, be a blessing. Jesus is LORD!

Peter

I have not read it, but I will say that we should give grace to all publications as a whole because we need to remember that behind every article is a human being. 1 person does not usually make an entire news source. Was it an “opinion” piece? If so, that definitely changes how you should feel about it. 1 person’s opinion should not deter you from reading a publisher’s future articles. A well-rounded publication, when publishing opinion pieces, would find multiple authors with many different worldviews.

Just food for thought.

Bear in mind that there is a difference between a momentary lapse in judgment – and a decades-spanning drift away from Christian integrity. The longer a trend persists, the harder it becomes to change course.

I haven’t seen this piece. I’ll have to read it. I think Elisabeth Elliot was absolutely an incredible woman of faith and sacrificed so much for Jesus. She’s an inspiring person for sure. Unfortunately, I also think her book Passion and Purity was coopted by evangelical purity culture and has been harmful to young women in many cases.
