different preferences and sources, from traditional outlets to social media, influence how we stay informed. Share your thoughts on what makes a news source trustworthy.
In today’s fast-paced world, staying informed is essential, but finding a trustworthy news source can be a challenge. Some prefer traditional outlets like newspapers or TV, while others rely on social media or independent platforms for updates. With so many choices, the question arises: where can we find accurate and balanced information?
What do you consider the best source of news, and why? Is it a major network, an online platform, or something else?
I am overall sceptical about ‘news’ in the social media age.
Algorithms are a major problem because they feed us what we have already said we think, but more hardline.
Media companies have too much to gain by hooking us in and they know a lot about how to do that. For example they know if you reoeat things enough people often believe it - and they play to that. There is a lot that is intentionally manipulative. We underestimate how smart
The use of the concept of ‘fake’ is a major problem. There is plenty that is fake though the term is also used often to undermine things media opposes that is in fact true or fair opinion.
There are also essentially 2 types of media owner - very rich people and states (public sector) and both of these have agendas of their own.
I do think knowing some actual news - and even opinions - does matter. I would suggest
dont just follow what you already agree with. Actively seek ‘news’ from outlets you know have different editorial policies (and indeed editirial biases!). Know those outlooks and factor thrm in - not im the sort of aggressive ‘anti’ wsy we oftrn sre encouraged to adopt, rather simply from an analytical perspective.
give an outlet credit if it properly looks to present more thsn one perspective (and still recognise its overall editirial policies)
our overall worldview should not reforct a media company’s editorial policy. We should think and reflect and pray beyond news companies in forming our overall outlook on life.
Generally I think media and social media are very questionable in their role in shaping hoe we see things. More manipulatuve than informatuve currently.
The best source of news is all the sources. If you want the full picture on anything, that is. So many outlets are weighted one way or another depending on their target audience and who pays their bills. If you want any chance at getting the entire news story, it’s best to read more than one source.
A journalist was being interviewed about his work covering the 1969 campaign. He said he teased his friend, a fellow journalist, who had been assigned to travel with the Nixon campaign. His friend told him he thought he could do Jack more good traveling with Nixon.
If one considers that colleges produce atheists, atheists prefer socialism, journalists are often required to be college graduates, one would not be surprised that news is generally slanted to achieve socialists goals.
Christians who have not matured can be deficient in wisdom, discernment, and recognizing truth such that biased news will mislead them.
