What's Your Communion Prayer?

What's Your Communion Prayer?

What do you pray before taking communion? Share a Scripture or quiet thought that helps you prepare your heart to remember Jesus.

At church on Sunday, my partner took communion at the altar, while I brought mine back to my seat to pray over it. After the service, we discussed what I had prayed over my communion, and the different ways to prepare your heart for this sacrament.

I always pray something like: “Lord, cleanse any sin I’ve held onto, and prepare me to receive this bread and cup in remembrance of You. Thank You for the cross, for your blood, and for the life You now live in me. Let my heart be right before You. Amen.”

Do you have a prayer or Scripture you meditate on when taking communion? Would love to hear how others prepare in spirit and truth.

Love this question. Thank you for sharing how you pray before the Table.

Here’s a simple pattern I use, with a short prayer and a few verses I sit with:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart… lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23–24)
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us…” (1 John 1:9)
