When God Begins to Reveal What We Don’t See in Ourselves

Lately I’ve been reflecting on something uncomfortable, but deeply important.

Most of us believe we are doing okay spiritually. We try to be kind, we try to live right, and on the surface, everything seems… clean.

But what happens when God begins to look deeper?

When the light of Jesus Christ touches the hidden parts of our hearts, we start to notice things we didn’t see before—
small compromises, quiet pride, hidden resentment, subtle sins we justified or ignored.

It’s like looking into a mirror that seemed clean… until it’s wiped.

That realization can be uncomfortable. Even humbling.

But I’m beginning to feel that this is actually grace.

Because God doesn’t reveal these things to condemn us—He reveals them to cleanse us.

Not to shame us… but to transform us.

It raises a question I’ve been thinking about:

How do we stay spiritually aware, instead of assuming we’re “fine”?
How do we allow God to search our hearts daily without becoming discouraged or overwhelmed?

I spent some time praying honestly about this—asking God to search, cleanse, and renew what I cannot see on my own.
If anyone wants to sit in that kind of quiet reflection, I’ll leave it here:

No pressure at all—I’d really value hearing your thoughts on this.

By coming into the presence of the Lord…and staying there. This is done by spending time in His Word reading and listening to the Holy Spirit.

Hebrews 4:12

**12 **For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart…./KJV

Do you see that? It says the word of God is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of your heart. Your Bible. Reading the Bible is like looking into a mirror and it will show you.

Have you ever asked the question, why is Sanctification a process? Why does it take time to Sanctify us?

Because the curse of sin upon the world damaged man in inner spiritual ways and Yes Jesus can repair the damage, but you have to be in His presence to do it. If you need a doctor, you go to the doctor. Same thing.

One of the scariest prayers for some to even think about praying is this. Why? Because many people do not want to know. Ready?

” Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! Psalm 139:2

What if I pray this prayer and God tells me “Yes.” “There are some grievous ways in you, and you must change.” Most people do not want to think of themselves as bad people. They like the way they are, and they think they are just fine. What if God sees you a bit differently?

Most are afraid that if God DOES point something out, it may disqualify them. The problem with this way of thinking is that if you find out you are disqualified, standing before Him, it is then too late.

We have to be open and honest. God knows us better than we know ourselves. We need to;

“So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.” 1 Peter 21-3

We need to

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” 2 Peter 3:18

We need to be brave enough to pray the prayer and open enough for God to correct us. know that this is true.

" For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” Hebrews 12:6

Only through Him can we truly be the children of god He calls us to be.
Peter

I think part of it is remembering that God reveals things to heal, not to discourage.

It can feel overwhelming if we think everything has to change at once, but most of the time it seems to happen gradually. One thing at a time, in a way we can actually process.

For me, it helps to hold both ideas together: that God sees everything, but also that He is patient. That makes it easier to stay open without feeling like I have to carry the weight of it all at once.
