Who Are the 144,000?

The identity of the 144,000 of Revelation 7 has been so twisted up by men’s doctrines that I can’t blame so many brethren being deceived about it because of all the ‘hirelings’ crept into Christ’s Church today that don’t really know their Bible beyond the basic principles of The Gospel.

We are told the 144,000 are 12,000 out of each tribe of Israel listed there. Not all the tribes of Israel are listed, as Ephraim and Dan are missing.

As per the way the Old Testament prophets is laid out, it sometimes points to the seed of Israel as one body, and the Gentiles as another body. Revelation 7 does this also regarding Christ’s Church, but not according to Darby’s Dispensationalist theories. The 144,000 are as much a part of Christ’s Church as believing Gentiles are.

But in Rev.7 they are separately described. The 144,000 represents only the ‘seed’ of Israel belonging to Christ’s Church. The “great multitude” of Rev.7:9 forward out of every nation and tongue represents the believing Gentiles in Christ’s Church.

Furthermore, and this is important, not all of the 12 tribes represent JEWS. The Jews per Bible history represent only those of the southern “kingdom of Judah”, which was made up of the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi, and only a small remnant of the northern ten tribes that left the north and went to Jerusalem because of Jeroboam’s calf idols in the north (See 2 Chronicles 11). The northern ten tribes were taken captive out of the holy land first, and became lost. But those of the southern kingdom of Judah remained in the land, and did not lose their heritage as part of Israel.

This is one of the main errors in not understanding the identity of who those 144,000 are, i.e., not understanding how God split old Israel into two separate peoples and kingdoms in Solomon’s days (See 1 Kings 11 thru 2 Kings 17).

Ultimately, this means that ONLY the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi in that 144,000 list represent believing Jews today. The rest of that 144,000 are made up of all the other tribes listed, and are not… Jews. The Jewish historian Josephus (100 A.D.) said that the title of JEW was used by those of Israel that returned to Jerusalem from the Babylon captivity. The ten northern tribe didn’t go captive in the Babylon captivity by king Nebuchadnezzar. The ten northern tribes instead were removed about 120 years prior by the kings of Assyria. So the ten tribes weren’t even there in the holy land when Nebuchadnezzar came and destroyed Jerusalem and Solomon’s temple, and took those of the “house of Judah” captive to Babylon. Many brethren don’t study their Old Testament histories, so they don’t know about all this.

I hold to the view that the 144,000 is symbolic of the entirety of God’s faithful through all time. It’s all of God’s people, including the Old Testament saints and the New Testament saints. The number is entirely symbolic: 12 x 12 x 1000; 12 tribes of Israel, 12 apostles, multiplied by 1,000 to indicate a very great number. In the same way that the Revelation speaks of a thousand years, but this shouldn’t be taken literally either; or the way in the Psalms it says God owns the cattle on a thousand hills–it’s not literally a thousand hills. God owns ALL the cattle on ALL the hills, because He’s God.

So the number is symbolic. It is framed within a 12 tribe context because in the New Testament the concept of Israel-ness remains, but is expanded in Jesus to include all who believe in Him, both Jew and Gentile. That’s why the Church and Israel share the same identity. (Replacement Theology is a misnomer as nothing replaced anything, and creating a wedge between Israel and the Church as Dispensationalism does undermines the fullness of the Gospel).

The point is that all of God’s people are sealed, marked by God. We are marked by the Gospel, as Paul says in Ephesians, having been sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism as the property of Jesus Christ. Hence why the “Great Multitude” of every tribe, tongue, and nation is sealed with God’s mark.

It’s not about Jews and Gentiles. It’s about Jesus. All in Jesus are one new man. There is neither Jew nor Greek, male nor female, slave nor free. The old divisions that separated us are eroded under the the Cross.

The “great multitude” is where Rev.7 starts pointing to the believing Gentiles that are ‘sealed’ with God’s Seal.

Rev.9 reveals that the locust army can only ‘sting’ those who do NOT HAVE God’s seal. Thus the Rev.7 Chapter is about the sealing by God of His servants in prep for the tribulation.

The 144,000 is a literal number, and only applies to the ‘seed’ of Israel, the tribes mentioned there. And they all are part of Christ’s Church, CHRISTIANS, and not unbelieving Jews like you are wrongly thinking.

And once Bible history about God’s split of old Israel into two separate kingdoms, and who made up the Jews, understanding who these 144,000 represent becomes easy.

But the Rev.7:9 verse starts speaking of believing Gentiles that will be sealed for the end too, as they also will come out of great tribulation it says. The four winds blowing means the last… day of this present world, the “day of the Lord”. Those winds are held back until all those in Christ are sealed with God’s Seal in prep for the “great tribulation”.

This sounds like “10 lost tribes” conspiracy stuff.

Well that’s a new one, the lost ten tribes of Israel is now a conspiracy! That idea definitely has to come from the Leftist-Communists who always twist the Truth.

Someone who doesn’t know about God’s split of old Israel starting at 1 Kings 11 only show their Biblical illiteracy.

Has anyone here ever even read… 1 Kings 11?

Calling someone you don’t agree with a “Leftist-Communist” doesn’t engender you to being taken particularly seriously.

But, no, I don’t believe in a “lost ten tribes”. Especially if the intended purpose, here, is to claim that white Europeans are Israelites. Which, I have a suspicion that this is where it’s heading.

If that’s the case, then I’ll happily take the “Leftist-Communist” designation if it means avoiding association with white supremacist stupidity.

I have to agree with this inquiry. Not the “Leftist-Communists” part, but what? If you read Revelation like a literal roadmap of the future, they are literal Israelites (including the recovered “lost” tribes). If God goes to the trouble of naming twelve specific tribes and assigning 12,000 people to each, He means literal descendants of Jacob.

However, there is a fascinating nuance here regarding the "Ten Lost Tribes."Historically, the ten northern tribes of Israel were fractured and scattered by the Assyrian Empire in 722 B.C., losing their distinct cultural and genealogical records over the centuries. While these tribes may be “lost” to human history and modern genealogy, they are not lost to God. In the end times, God will precisely identify and seal 12,000 literal, biological descendants from each lineage to serve as unique witnesses.

Curious, if you say:

How do you see the 144,000?
Peter

There does exist archaeological proof of the migrations of the ten northern tribes of Israel westward from Assyria. Professor Leroy Waterman in 1930 translated Assyrian cuneiform tablets written by the Royal Assyrian Empire, and translated the names by which the Assyrians called those of the ten tribes. He linked them to the Cimmerian tribes that migrated westward into Asia Minor and Europe. The Scottish nobles in their Declaration of Arbroath around 1300 A.D. mentioned how they had migrated from the land of Israel in ancient times, and came there in the Isles.

When Lord Jesus said He was not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel, He was speaking about the ten scattered tribes of Israel.

This evidence of course is hidden by those who control the fields of modern archaeology and anthropology. So the actual ‘conspiracy’ is with those who try to hide that history of their migrations.

There’s two branches of Jewish scholars that have opposing opinions about the ten tribes. Some of them claim the ten tribes are forever lost and will never be joined back with the “house of Judah” (Jews). Other Jewish scholars do see them returning.

So the scholars who are against the ten tribes returning push the propaganda with false claims like the ten tribes were already assimulated back to the holy land when God’s Word and history does not show that. And their excuse to claim the ten tribes are forever lost is for the same purpose that the “synagogue of Satan” who are not born of Israel, make keep claiming that they only, represent the children of Israel, and thus hide behind the name Jew which name originated from the sole tribe of Judah (per Jewish historian Josephus).

Many of my Christian brethren simply have yet to recognize the propaganda by the ‘false’ Jews who only claim… to be Jews, but are not, and are the “synagogue of Satan”. They began creeping in among the Jews of the southern “kingdom of Judah” long ago, and God’s Word points to them in several places.

So for someone claiming to be a Christian starts trying to pin me as a Jewish Pharisee, and claim the lost ten tribes subject is a conspiracy, then that tells me they have been listening to those ‘false’ Jews of the “synagogue of Satan” that Lord Jesus pointed to in Revelation 2 & 3.

I called it. This is nothing more than “white people are the real Israelites” nonsense.

Sorry. Not interested in entertaining antisemitic white supremacist conspiracy theories.

A symbolic number that signifies the total number of all God’s people. In the same way that the 12 gates and 12 foundations of the heavenly Jerusalem is symbolic.

The Apocalypse is a book of apocalyptic imagery, of symbols. A city (Rome) is described as a harlot drunk on the blood of the saints. A beast rising out of the sea is a man whose name has the numerical value of six hundred and sixty-six. The devil is spoken of as a dragon. Etc.

The book isn’t about literally 144,000 Jewish people, or a literal prostitute named Babylon, or Jesus reigning for a literal thousand years. It is a book of the hope of God for the people of God in the midst of suffering and oppression rooted in the victory of Jesus Christ, the Lamb who was slain, has conquered death and hell, and who is now seated on the throne, and who will come again to judge the quick and the dead–whose kingdom has no end.

First, Thank you for taking the time to respond. I must repectfully disagree. I would say this is a bit of a stretch that relys on theories, and not on the actual Word of God. As I have stated before, or perhaps elswhere, there are simply way to many things that have not come to pass, to make Revelation clearly a book of prophcy that is still to come.
Peter

My sense upon the 144k as a futurist is that I would match them up with chapter 10 of Revelation. In my understanding of eschatology, God revives Israel during the tribulation second half. I would see those tribes as middle eastern historical decent. Semitic.

One of the difficulties in interpretation with the 144k (beyond what has been expressed here on this thread) is chapter 7 appearing so early on in Revelation. Where they also appear, chapter 14, it would seem closer to the midpoint.

I believe the way to reconcile this is that the 144k will be sealed up (protected) from the trumpet judgements. Which would imply they go through them. And since that is so, it would make sense they be brought up early on even before the trumpets. Those souls won by their impactful ministry as noted in chapter 7 (at least this is how it comes across to me) are shown, I believe, in chapter 7 are shown as a trophy of God’s exited original intent to have used Israel in the old testament to witness to the rest of the world…finally realized. And that group we see in chapter 7 beyond the 144k appear to be souls won by them.

And in the language used of them (the souls won) language of the fourth bowl (second half of tribulation period) can be noticed: “nor will the sun [c]beat down on them, nor any scorching heat.” In that sense it would seem chapter 7 is actually a modular narrative literary device of “flash forward.” To a trophied moment in God’s excitement along the aisles of His redemption plan. Blessings.

Hey @TCC. I think I agree. By anchoring the 144,000 in a literal, Semitic, Middle Eastern descent, you are strictly adhering to the historical-grammatical text of Revelation 7:4–8, which explicitly names twelve specific tribes of Israel. Are you rejecting the idea that this is merely a metaphor for the Christian Church, insisting that God fulfills His Old Testament covenants with literal Israel during the Tribulation?

You correctly identify a major structural tension: the 144,000 appear in Chapter 7 (before the Trumpets) and Chapter 14 (near the end/midpoint). I believe you are saying Chapter 7 introduces them early because they need to be “sealed” (protected) before the devastating Trumpet judgments begin (Rev 7:3).

However, the multitude standing before the throne later in Chapter 7 isn’t an immediate chronological event. It is a prophetic flash-forward. A “trophy room” glimpse of the ultimate fruit of their ministry, which actually culminates much later in the Tribulation.

The multitude is explicitly described as being rescued from the specific cosmic judgments (the scorching sun) that don’t actually occur until the second half of the Tribulation. Therefore, Chapter 7 must look forward to the future of the narrative.

A couple of questions, if you do not mind. In Revelation 7’s list of tribes, the tribe of Dan is completely omitted, and Ephraim is replaced by Joseph, while Levi (traditionally excluded from land inheritance lists) is included.

If Chapter 7 is a literal, historical-descent restoration of Old Testament Israel’s witnessing function, how do you understand the specific textual anomalies in the tribal list, like the omission of Dan? Does the specific makeup of this list alter how we view their historical match-up?"

You mentioned matching the 144,000 up with Revelation 10. In Chapter 10, John eats the little scroll and is told he must “prophesy again about many peoples and nations and tongues and kings,” followed by the introduction of the Two Witnesses in Chapter 11.

I love the structural connection to Chapter 10. Do you see the 144,000 operating alongside or in tandem with the Two Witnesses of Chapter 11, or do you view them as the global arm of the prophecy John is told to deliver in Chapter 10?

Hi Peter. Thanks for your reply brother. Working my way backward:

TWO WITNESSES

  • Their time seems to start around a temple rebuilding period (early trib timing)
  • Their ministry ends when the AC gets supernatural power (midpoint)
  • Their ministry ends just before the 7th Trump (bowls)
  • 2 Witnesses perform during Trumpets
  • I believe they also perform during seals (early trib timing)

With the above in place, I see seals and trumpets all occurring in the first half of the tribulation. And only bowls for the whole second half of the tribulation. I believe the 2 Witnesses arrive at the beginning of the tribulation. And are removed when the AC finally gets supernatural power to demand worship (the midpoint).

I believe one of the two witnesses is Eijah. So that is an important biblical roll-out to be held distinctly (having so much Jewish build behind it–leaving a seat for Elijah in modern Jewish ritual). So i don’t see the 2 Witnesses merged with the 144k because the 2 Witnesses could be called (in my estimation) “Elijah Returning.” If that were occurring at the same time as the 144k, it would tend to eclipse them. The two witnesses i believe are too unique to overlap.

In addition, the 2 witnesses coming first makes more sense in that they would seem to serve as some form of over shepherding roll. In the sense of granting time for the 144k to prep. And being the horses that lead (1st half) the towed “Israel Witness Re-Ignited” carriage (2nd half). So I would see Rev 10 and 144k all occurring throughout the whole second half of the tribulation.

. . . . .

TRIBAL NAMES

Please see the overview chatgpt link: Debate on Tribe of Dan

So we see a theme. Dan and Ephriam being omitted…mostly notably likely for reason of their over familiarity with idolatry. I believe in both cases the absence of those names AND the addition of Joseph’s is poetic share for: This is Israel moving by the Holy Spirit.

For Levi I believe it is because Israel is “so close” to inheriting the thousand year kingdom. In eschatological circles today the preponderance of focus tends to be the tribulation and end time deception we see today. But the tribulation is only 7 years. I believe a truer biblical focus aligns with using the thousand year reign as a filter and lens to see through rather than the tribulation and end time deception. After the “7-year bridge” of the tribulation, Israel ruling with Christ is what I believe is the better filter to understand some potential themes in Revelation by.

I believe this is also true because when Christ came He offered Israel (not the church) the kingdom. That was the first gospel roll-out. I believe had Israel believed, the thousand year reign would have come much sooner. AND John the Baptist would have been the literal stand-in for Elijah. God wanted to give Israel the kingdom back then. Israel’s rejection forged church history. So I would see Revelation thematics as “excited” to finally bring THAT kingdom to Israel. And the tribal names poetically reflect that sentiment.

. . . . .

FLASH FORWARD

If i am correct, you seem to strongly agree that chapter 7 is “in part” flash forward. If that is true brother, out of all of the conversations I have had regarding eschatology for a decade now, you are THE only one who would see that…lol.

. . . . .

WHY 144K IN CHAPTER 7?

Yes–chapter 7 introduces the 144k early because they are to be sealed up for the chapter 8 oncoming trumpets. In fact, looking at 8:1, this is where we have the silence in heaven. I believe this occurs because the trumpets (I believe) are God’s responses to an actual roll-out phase of Satan’s kingdom “setting-up” period on earth.

Now obviously the judgements are not including this “set-up” itself. Rather what i mean is those judgements occur because the trumpet timeframe occurs because (silence in heaven) the time has come where God has granted Satan a short time to literally finally have his full 15-minutes of ruling fame on earth kingdom “set-up” path. To me, this is the symbolic imagery in Rev 12–the Red Dragon–symbolic of the trumpet judgement period. So the focus of the trumpets is I believe a hallmark moment. It is not just like there are 3 judgement cycles in the tribulation:

  • seals
  • trumpets
  • bowls

But rather i would see each set having its unique operating system or reason for function. If you would like i could elaborate on the seals. But the more common two are trumpets and bowls. So the mention of the 144k in Chapter 7 as those being prepped for sealing (in relation to trumpets) to me, is a HUGE emphasis. Because it shows:

  • Even though Satan is setting up a kingdom on earth, God’s promises to Israel transcend that
  • God’s good character seen EVEN THOUGH all heaven will grow silent because of a pathway granted for Satan to have a kingdom path setup

And so it is important to place the 144k there. BECAUSE the focus theme is “the thousand year reign” more than the shinning horror lights of the devil finally getting his Rosemary’s Baby Hour. The focus is on the fast approaching 1000 year period to come MORE than yet another evil event cometh during the tribulation period. If that makes sense?

  • trumpets – Heightened extreme judgements because of this being the actual set-up period of the Satan’s kingdom on earth. And trumpets is God’s reaction to this whole period Satan is setting up his kingdom. BONUS – In addition, i would line this up with the Leopard period of Daniel’s animals.

  • bowls = God’s reaction to this world once THEN Satan is actually ruling a kingdom on earth. BONUS 2 – I would line this period up with Daniel’s animals for that of the final beast.

Yes. This is as you say. Blessings.

Yes. I think one of the problems people have when reading the Word is that they have to dissect it, rather than just reading it. “Thou shalt not commit murder.” But wait. Who art thou? What is murder? Does this apply to everyone? What about the Death Penalty? Do some not deserve to die? What about when God tells you to kill? This cannot mean what it seems to say. There has to be another “interpretation” that better fits my point of, uh, I mean the truth. Maybe God just means, Don’t murder anyone?

Well, I cannot… agree with many of the false assumptions about who the 144,000 are as presented. God’s written Word is much more ‘specific’ on the matter, it simply seems that some have trouble with keeping focus in God’s Word and actual history about it.

KEY BIBLICAL POINTS:

  1. All of the tribes of Israel listed in Revelation 7 are Israelites of the seed, but they are not… all Jews. And they are all Christian, because that is who that ‘sealing’ with God’s Seal is about.

  2. The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus (37-100 A.D.), stated that the title of ‘JEW’ originated from the sole tribe of Judah. He said that is the title the small remnant (of the “house of Judah”) who returned to Jerusalem from the Babylon captivity called themselves, including the foreigners that went captive with them and returned.

  3. At the time of Judah’s captivity to Babylon, and return of a small remnant of them to Jerusalem after that captivity, as listed in Ezra 2, reveals NONE of the ten tribes involved. That because the ten northern tribes of the “house of Israel” had already been removed about 130 years prior to Judah going into captivity to Babylon by king Nebuchadnezzar.

  4. Most brethren, it is sad to say, do not know about God’s split of old Israel into two separate ‘houses’, in the days of Solomon’s son Rehoboam. Below is how the tribes of Israel were literally grouped in the two houses, and this was long, long before any of the tribes of Israel were scattered in captivity.

HOUSE OF JUDAH:
Tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi, ONLY.
Capital City - Jerusalem
Lands - Judea, the southern portions of the holy land.
Known by Titles - Jews, Judah, Jerusalem, house of Judah, kingdom of Judah, Aholibah.

HOUSE OF ISRAEL:
Tribes of Reuben, Gad, Aser, Nepthali, Manasses, Simeon, Issachar, Zabulon, Joseph.
Capital City - Samaria, in the northern land
Lands - northern lands of the holy land
Known by Titles - Israel, Ephraim, Samaria, Joseph, house of Israel, Aholah.

Obviously per God’s written Word, the majority of Israelites did NOT use the title of Jew. That was used by those of the southern “kingdom of Judah” at Jerusalem-Judea, including by the foreigners there. This was because the ten northern tribes of Israel made up the majority of total number of Israelites before the split. And they were scattered out of the holy lands by God over 100 years prior to Judah’s (Jews) captivity to Babylon.

And notice that the tribes of Dan and Ephraim are missing in Rev.7, but added back in per Ezekiel 48 in final.

I will leave aside the whole “Neither Jew nor Greek,” thing for a second, unless that is your point. You are completely right about the Old Testament history. After King Solomon, Israel split into the Northern Kingdom (Israel) and the Southern Kingdom (Judah). The Northern Kingdom was exiled by Assyria, and the Southern Kingdom was later exiled by Babylon.

Your argument hinges heavily on a strict, ancient definition of the word “Jew.” Originating only from Judah. However, by the New Testament era, when Revelation was written, the language had evolved. In the 1st century, the terms “Jew” and “Israelite” were often used interchangeably by Jews, Romans, and Christians alike to describe anyone of the stock of Jacob, regardless of their original tribal lines.

The Apostle Paul identifies himself as a Jew (Acts 22:3), but he explicitly notes he is from the tribe of Benjamin (Philippians 3:5). Under your strict definition, Benjamin was part of the House of Judah, but not strictly “Jews” by blood origin. Yet Paul comfortably uses both terms.

While the ten northern tribes were scattered, they were not completely lost. Before the Assyrian captivity, many godly individuals from the northern tribes migrated south to Judah to worship at Jerusalem. Chronicles 11:14-16 and 2 Chronicles 30:11-18. Therefore, the post-exilic “Jews” actually contained a remnant of all twelve tribes.

John doesn’t just say “Israel”; he meticulously breaks it down by naming 12,000 from each specific tribe. Judah, Reuben, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Manasseh, Simeon, Levi, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin. By the 1st century, the distinct geographic borders of those ten northern tribes no longer existed. Therefore, for God to specifically seal 12,000 from the tribe of Reuben or Asher implies either:

God knows exactly who belongs to which lineage, even if human genealogies were lost, and is sealing ethnic descendants of Jacob. He is using the historic 12 tribes to represent the complete, ordered structure of His people. Either way, in the common language of the New Testament era, ethnic Israelites were collectively referred to as the Jewish people.
Peter

Yes, I’m well aware of that.

Once God removed the ten northern tribes of Israel out of the holy land, the Jews of the “house of Judah” in the southern lands were the only Israelites left (2 Kings 17:18). So naturally they claimed to be the only Israel, and thus the nations also recognized them all as Jews.

But my point is that the ten lost tribes of the “house of Israel” were not called Jews, nor did they use that appellation for themselves. The Jewish historian Josephus confirms this too, that only those Israelites of the southern kingdom of Judah used that title of Jew for themselves.

The reason why this distinction is so Biblically important is in connection with God having split old Israel, and gave ‘ISRAEL’ to Jeroboam of the tribe of Ephraim to be “king of Israel” over only the northern ten tribes. And after the split only the northern ten tribe kingdom is known as “Israel”. Thus it is pointing to the Biblical fact that wherever the majority of Israelites are located (meaning the ten tribes who made up the majority), that is actually where God’s true Israel is. And since the ten tribe’s captivity and scattering, that application of “Israel” pointing to the northern ten tribes has not been in the holy land even to this day. Instead it is connected with where the majority of those who accepted The Gospel of Jesus Christ settled, in the Christian Western nations of history.
