I’m new to learning about clergy attire and was wondering.
why do priests, pastors, and ministers wear robes?
Is it just tradition, or is there a deeper meaning behind it?
I’d love to hear insights from those who are more familiar with this!
I hope this isn’t another attempt to promote Houston Stevenson’s clergy attire.
Is it?
Otherwise-- there’s google. Most pastors don’t wear robes unless they are in the bathroom.
In some denominations, it is a sign of ordination after years of formal education in a theological seminary or school of divinity.
Sadly, unqualified pastors will purchase these robes and wear them, faking their credentials.
Hi,
The smart aleck in me of course says, "Because it is frowned upon to officiate church services naked.
I asked your question to Google.
I received a pretty decent answer.
“Churches often have their clergy dress in robes to signify the solemnity of the occasion, visually distinguish the leader of the service, demonstrate respect for the sacredness of the worship space, and connect with historical traditions of their faith, essentially setting apart the clergy member as a representative of God and their role as a spiritual leader within the congregation; the robes can also be seen as a symbol of humility and service to the community.” (Google)
