Department of Government Efficiency - Good or Bad Idea?

The idea of a Department of Government Efficiency sparks a fascinating debate about the role of federal oversight in streamlining government operations. Proponents argue that a dedicated department could reduce waste, improve coordination, and deliver better services to citizens. On the other hand, critics question whether adding another layer of bureaucracy might contradict its very purpose and lead to unintended consequences.

This concept has resurfaced as leaders propose bold structural changes to address inefficiencies and ensure accountability. How might a Department of Government Efficiency align with Christian values like stewardship and justice? Does it risk centralizing too much power, or could it genuinely serve the public good?

“Bold, new leaders?” How about incompetent henchmen and power grabbers? Thus farce is Trumps grab at destroying Medicare, Medicaid, and other assistance programs that keep people alive.

If they slash congressional salaries instead, go for it. But that won’t happen.

I think it’s a great idea if it actually accomplishes its stated goal of eliminating waste and abuse. The Federal government has become a monstrosity that our founders never intended.

Hi,
The waste is in the levels of bureaucracy. Why are so many needed? And each level takes a piece of the pie. Remove levels.

I think it will be good mostly. Government has gone far from the times of the Constitution and we often drown in bureaucracy and duplication of services. If some departments are moved from the DC general area, perhaps they will be better located out among the citizens where they can be better monitored. Someday China or another debtor will call in our 36 trillion dollar debt and we can’t afford to keep such a huge government, which we have paid for by going into such debt. We will have to sell off some kind of collateral.

A bad idea that will be run by cruel egomaniacs

Hi,
President Reagan asked for a Balanced Budget Amendment. If only Congress had listened to him. Now we are $36,200,000,000,000 + in debt, and Congress will not even consider it.

If we gathered up all of the US dollars, in the world, it would amount to 21.3 trillion. So we owe more than the total amount of US money already printed. If you break the 36.2 trillion up, each American owes over $107,000. No checks please.

Until Congress addresses this issue, the USA will not grow economically. Our government is currently propped on other nations money. What happens when other countries stop loaning us money? I believe we are probably 5-10 years from economic collapse. Our government needs to fix this while they still can.

Blessings

Fix it by cutting congressional salaries and chopping their perks. Defund obsolete programs.

NOT by stealing my SSR, or causing more deaths (including mine) by ripping Medicare. This is where the cuts will start, not where they need to start.

Start a military draft. It frees up the job market, provides education and training, and physical fitness. This will in turn keep folks out of the expensive penitentiary system we now have. We can close prisons, not build more.

Financial incentives for young people to get a degree and a trade school certificate. I think we would see a lower rate of people needing welfare to survive.

But this won’t happen because the entire department will be built on punishing the poor and elderly and putting more money into the pockets of the wealthy.

Has there ever been a nation that owed more than it could ever pay? Eventually Europe paid their WW2 debt. If the US collapses, what would that look like? Won’t the federal Government have to lay off nine tenth of it’s manpower and stop almost all services? services? Maybe not even have a paid military. O maybe we would just give our- self to some other country or group of countries.

European countries didn’t pay off debt after both world wars. Massive amounts of debt were forgiven. The USA forgave what UK owed under the lend-lease act.

You don’t kill off your citizens to pay debt. The world learned that lesson after WW1 when Germans, strangled by debt , watched its citizens starve to death.

Pay Debts with congressional salaries and NASA? Yes. With Social Security and Medicare? NEVER!

Hi,
Here is an example of government waste.

We have the FBI.
We have the DEA.
We have the ATF.
The US Secret Service
Customs and Border Protection
US Integration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
US Marshals Service
Homeland Security
And the US Coast Guard.

Plus but not included are the CIA, and the NSA.
They are mostly international.
Oh yeah, we also have The National Park Service. an fish and game wardens.

And each one has a beuracrecy.

Does America really need all nine agencies I originally named!
Why can’t they be consolidated?
Why can’t the DEA and the ATF be part of the FBI?
It seems like UCE, Custom and Borders, and maybe Homeland Security could morph into one agency?
That would turn five bureaucracies into two.

Why do we need to have an IRS?
In today,'s world, the IRS is obsolete.
Figure out how much the government needs, and put it into a percentage, 17%, 22%, whatever is needed.
Then that percentage of our paychecks goes to pay the tax.
Everybody pays the same into the government, no loopholes.
The one, and only, exception would be the poor…
Anybody earning below the poverty level would have their taxes forgiven.
So they would get a check back at the end of the year.
Why can’t that be done?

If Musk can do any of this, we would not have to spend as much.
We might get a break too

Blessings

You have a point. But if Churches and God’s people did what they used to do and what they should do, we would not need toe government social programs.

Churches will not do it too many are dumping inner city outreach programs and cancelling foreign missions. Stage productions and high salaries are what some churches now invest in.

And I was forced to pay into ssr and may now have that money taken away.

Plus, churches and houses of worship of other religions can be very picky about who they help.

Tax chuches and put that money toward debt, perhaps.

It’s more than an idea whose time has come. It’s vital.

Republicans are not the only ones embracing President-elect Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency to reduce the size of government.

A week after winning the Nov. 5 election, Trump announced that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will head up a new efficiency department commission with the goal of dismantling government bureaucracy and “cut wasteful expenditures” throughout federal agencies by July 4, 2026.

Although most Democrats likely will oppose DOGE, Business Insider reported several party members who have indicated they want to join discussions concerning any proposals.

Reps. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., Val Hoyle, D-Ore., and Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., and Sens. Chris Coons, D-Del., Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., were named as Democrats open to working with DOGE.
