It’s been said that β€˜song lyrics are poetry set to music’. So I hope no one is put off that what I’m posting is not actually a poem. That said…

Here are some lyrics to a song, written by singer and composer Ken Medema. The words have been on my mind these last few days due to hostilty and adversity aimed in my (and others) direction.

β€œIf This is Not the Place”

If this is not the place where tears are understood,
Then where shall I go cry?
And if this is not he place where my spirit can take wings,
Where shall I go fly?

I don’t need another place for trying to impress you
with just how good and virtuious I am.
I don’t need another place for always being on top of things,
Everybody knows that it’s a sham.

I don’t need another place for always wearing a smile,
Even when it’s not the way I feel…
So if this is not a place where my questions can be heard,
Then where – tell me where – shall I go speak?

Part of the reason I think many people struggle with adversity is because the don’t know how to reach out to others, or have no one to reach out to. They don’t deal well with it on their own. Having a community of fellow Christians can mean a world of change to them.

I would just like to say thank you to those who understand this, and those who reach out to those who are struggling. Blessings to you, and thanks and praise to GOD for you and this community of believers.

The Gospel

A cosmos imagined, from chaos coalesced,
on nothing God hung His bright world.
Terra-firma emerges, a home for His image,
from dust a man-kind is unfurled.

Senses awakened, not alone in the garden.
of his maker new-man has no doubt.
Then sin brings a shroud, separation ensues,
for God, man looks up and looks out.

New every morning, God’s merciful love
sends His Son as full payment for sin.
Emanuel here, heaven brought near,
our Maker, looks down and looks in.

Cosmos reimagined, from chaos restored,
new heaven, new earth in the wings.
The darkness rolled back, relations restored,
new life through redemption light springs.

A sentiment I’ve heard more than once…

The Wall
β€œFor in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Matthew 7:2

I know just what you think of me. I see it in your eyes

That sideways glance to steal a look before you pass me by.

I see the way your nostrils flare as if some pungent trace

Of street and dirt and unwashed pits assailed your private space.

And do you think that I don’t see how deftly you can hide

Behind that wall of us and them erected in your pride?

I know that you’re unsure of me. In fear you’ve locked me out

Your hand pulled back as you think twice. Your wallet closed by doubt.

My sign for food is just a ruse. I’m really after drink

So I can dull my addict’s head, or so you seem to think.

I see more than you think I do. I’m watching as you pass

In polished shoes and hurried pace. That strut of middle class.

There was a time when I looked up and greeted you with smile

But I have learned and now I know, you find my presence vile.

I don’t care what you think of me. The verdict has been set

So long ago, I know not when, you saw me as a threat.

The Choice of the Cross

Two others were led to Golgotha. Two thieves with their debts to be paid

Found guilty when tried and mercy denied.

A sentence that no man evades.

They led our Lord Jesus between them. One man to His right and His left

Crucified there, so all made aware

The wages of sin is our death.

The soldiers, the scribes and the chief Priests, even those who gathered in dread

With taunting distain they trampled God’s name

Adding shame to our Lord’s humble head.

One thief joined the voice of his captors and echoed their words of disgust

While the soldiers jeered, to Jesus he sneered

β€œYou’re the Christ? Save yourself and save us!”

β€œDo you not fear God?” cried the other, though death wouldn’t be far along

β€œOur death we deserve for justice is served

But this man has done nothing wrong"!”

Then he turned his head to the Savior. Finding hope though nailed to a tree

Weighted by sin and guilty within

He said, β€œJesus, remember me”.

And Jesus replied, β€œI assure you. Today you’ll accompany me”

From one cross to the other, that sin might be covered

Stood the thief who had faith to believe.

Two men side by side their Messiah. Two choices for all men to make

Humility or pride. Our hearts must decide

Which side of the cross will you take?
